🛠️ How It Works
Jamie Black and fellow mentors support youth ages 15-30 as they learn to craft effective online stories that generate real results—whether that’s increased engagement or higher sales.
Our focus is on genuine digital engagement:
- Simple, effective strategies
- Real conversations
- Community-building
- Adding value and following leads
Jamie personally attends all initial meetings to establish a clear direction, then gradually steps back to give interns the opportunity to develop confidence and ownership in their work.
With your support and patience, Jamie guides each intern through the key aspects of self-employment, including:
- Task management
- Timeliness and accountability
- Communication skills
- Creative storytelling
You’ll start with a 2–3 hour onboarding session, and from there, most of the collaboration happens online—flexible, efficient, and supportive.
A Message from our Founder
Hello, my name is Jamie Black. I have been an entrepreneur in the same field of outdoor play with Wild Craft Play for over 20 years. With 3 years in school in Tourism Management, then challenged my degree to get my MA in Environmental Education and Communication and I am professional coach and guide, I have come to understand that I am here to help people tell their story in creative ways.
Keeping a sole proprietor afloat, even through Covid, is a feat for sure, so adapting to the climate, and becoming resourceful is what builds resilience (among other things.)
Over the years I have held many contracts, and personal initiatives to teach young people how to be a digital storyteller, because this is a fast and free way to promote yourself, and I have seen first hand that young people aren’t taught how important it is to share your story, in order to thrive. I have also met many people in the valley who could benefit from a more affordable option for better results in online storytelling. I haven’t seen many options that are affordable and produce results. So I figure this initiative would be a win win.
Now that I have been in the Comox Valley for a few years, I thought I would offer my support again to young people to learn these skills, and small businesses to expand your market.
Digital StoryWorks is a new initiative built from 20 years in the field as a mentor, guide and coach.
With your payment of $550/m for a 3 month test run, you are paying for the employment of a young adult who is learning/mastering the skills of digital storytelling, and covering some basic costs like online courses (we pay a fee for monthly), and other tools, like this app, Earth Guides, which we pay monthly for as well to host private and confidential conversations like this.
If you do wish to make a larger contribution, let’s talk, this can be financially, but it could also be with cross-promotional tactics and other things.
🧠Why This Works
Young people today have incredible potential, but few opportunities to practice the real-world skills they need — especially in digital marketing. You get support. They get experience. It’s a win–win.
🧰 Jamie’s Portfolio: Success Stories
- Rotary Youth Leadership Camp Nov 14-16 2025
3 Youth from the Youth Media Project in the Comox Valley attended the RYLA Camp in Cowichan. We captured footage from the entire event with high quality cameras.
Learned the art of effective documenting, interviews and being invisible during events.
Footage captured will be used for a documentary and future promo for Rotary.

We believe that emailing is THE FASTEST and most trusted way to communicate with people who believe in us, so we use Kit.com as a platform for emails. With over 500 committed members at present, and no advertising to join.
Private Facebook Group of over 600 members. We also believe in the power of a private group. Have a peak at our private group (you will have to request access). CLICK HERE.
Jamie Black Hummingbird’s Personal Influencer Page, we learned that we get THE MOST action as a person, so we put everything on our page, and share other peoples pages and events all the time. Highly recommend this.
Diverse Images. We believe in the theory of posting anything and everything, with some branding, but the intention is to reach as many different people as possible. Branding and color schemes aren’t necessarily going to reach more people. More types of images will.
Finally our website www.wildcraftplay.com think of a website as a library, where you send people to specific pages to access what you intend them to access. We even have some landing pages on there that do not have the header, to help the interested party find what we want them to see.

WHAT is Earth Guides anyway?
It’s like a compass to consult when things are going sideways, when you are starting on your path, and when you are nearing the peak of your adventure. After 20 years of doing this work, we wanted to come up with a name we could call ourselves that resonated with the work we do and who we are. We are Earth Guides, doing this work with and for the Earth, guiding others with and for each other in a good way.
~ Testimonials ~
Teaching and Learning together since 2008.
This portal is for teachers/community program leaders, facilitators, who lead others on Earth.
It is the magic of wonderment that ignites a sense of ownership, responsibility, inclusiveness and togetherness.Jamie Black
From the Founder, Jamie Black
It has been years of calling in community, talking about hard topics, and trying to find a platform that works for people. It’s no circle in the woods, but it is pretty darn accessible, and it’s private.
With so many people reaching out to access resources, my time and the expertise of other professionals in the field, I needed something that could enhance people’s experience, make the experience more accessible to more people, and provide valuable content and resources.
With 20 years in the field and a thesis on The Hummingbird Approach; A Case Study of Guided Discovery Learning with Children in Nature, we have a few techniques that hook children, ignite a craving for more, generating anticipation for the next activity.Â
I have built a Live Action Role Play world called Wild Craft Play from the shoulders of giants such as; John Dewey, Jerome Bruner, and Montessori’s theories of Guided Discovery Learning; Jon Young and the 8 Shields Model with the Art of Mentoring; Role Play strategies from World of WarCraft, Cards, and resources from games like WildCraft, The Sacred Storyteller, Practices such as using dice in DnD, Tangible resources like in Minecraft, Questing with Clark and Glazier, and LARPing, the list goes on.Â
With every adventure, we adapt to the changes, especially now with what is happening because of Covid. We have learned to break things down a bit more, offer more support to teachers and leaders online, ensuring that there is less reading required and more tangible tools to simply use such as videos of Jamie speaking directly to the youth.Â
By turning this into a “compass” where you get what you need when you need it, rather than receiving a handful of reading material to start, the journey of learning by doing is much easier to swallow, allowing time to digest and celebrate success.
Kelli, a trained Wild Craft Play practitioner on Vancouver Island, has a class of grade 6’s and a great wilderness setting at a private school. She hosted Wild Craft Play 3 days a week, for at least 4 hours a day for months, which is not required for success in this program, yet quite a privilege. The feedback from young people is that they want to play this more, more often, and for longer. Even in sideways rain, one youth hollered “Can we play this all winter?”
“All of them worked on what they were passionate about, it was part of what they were selling and what they were creating. Now they’ve gone beyond that, outside the classroom. All of them have… Wild Craft Play brings back the magic.” Kelli Rosenbeck
Dive into a community of support, tools, and resources that will guide you to your own discovery with confidence.
Does any of this resonate with you?
Based on my life experience as an outdoor guide for over 20 years, plus an MA in Environmental Education and Communication, I have come to understand that we need to build a “common sense” when it comes to outdoor experiences, and the main way that we can do this is through experience.

See for yourself what other’s have to say about the programs with these testimonials.
